Top 5 Sustainable Fashion Events in New York City

With Earth Day coming up on April 22nd, it's a great time to learn how to be more sustainable and eco-friendly and take action to positively impact the planet.


Limiting fast fashion purchases, shopping at sustainable shops, choosing natural materials and recycled fabrics, and participating in clothes swapping are all great ways to help you be more eco-friendly in your fashion choices. By participating in these acts, you are reducing your carbon footprint and aiming for a greener future.


If you are interested in making a difference in the fight against climate change, here are five sustainable fashion events in New York City that you don't want to miss:


Sustainable Fashion Workshop NYC


Cindy Castro, Latina fashion designer and founder of Cindy Castro New York, is hosting a sustainable fashion workshop for only twenty-five dollars at 252 West 38th Street in New York City on April 20th. This event will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. 


If you decide to attend this event, you must bring a personal item you love but have not worn for a while. In this workshop, you will meet the team and the seamstress, who will teach you how to repair your loved item. You will also get to meet the designer and listen to her talk about her journey in sustainable fashion while also getting a first glance at her new collection.


Earth Day Celebration: Clothing Swap, Climate Talks, Vegan Eats


Veggie Mijas, a non-profit organization advocating for food and environmental justice in BIPOC spaces, is hosting an Earth Day celebration from 1 to 4 p.m. on April 20that Pier 57.

Veggie Mijas is partnering with Climate CaféBlack Girl Environmentalist,  Remake, ReclyptWorn Not Torn, and We Are Atlas to create a sustainable and successful event that celebrates not only Earth Day but also an environmental cause. 


This celebration includes clothing swaps, Climate Café conversations, and tasty vegan treats. If you are participating in the clothing swap, bring up to five items of clothing or footwear in good condition to swap with other attendees. If you are looking for further information on how to maintain your clothing, the Reclypt team will assist you with any questions regarding upcycling, repairing, and proper care. By participating in clothing swaps, you are not only improving your wardrobe but also saving the planet. Clothing swaps are sustainable as they promote circular fashion and reduce the carbon footprint. During the Climate Café conversations, you will learn about sustainability, climate action, and the impact of small steps towards a healthier planet while enjoying tasty vegan treats from Local Roots.


This event is free for anyone looking to make a positive change on the planet; however, donations are accepted if you are interested in helping further.


Standard Talks x Ap0cene: The Future of Slow Fashion


Standard Talks collaborated with Ap0cene, a community marketplace, to host a sustainable fashion panel on Earth Day, April 22th, in High Line, New York City. The event will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. 


This event will feature a discussion panel on slow fashion and how designers navigate sustainably. You will also have a chance to view and purchase the panelists' work.


Fri. Volunteer at The Sustainable Fashion Community Center - East Harlem


This next event is hosted on April 26th from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at The Sustainable Fashion Community Center. You will be responsible for sorting, hanging, and organizing clothing. You will also get to swap your garments, so bring in items you want to get rid of, and you will receive another item, a healthier alternative to upgrading your wardrobe.


Attending this event and volunteering is a great way to stay sustainable and contribute to the positive impact on the world.


Sip & Swap: An Earth Month Clothing Swap and Fireside Chat

If you are interested in attending the Sip & Swap on April 27th between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., all you need to do is bring clothing, accessories, or shoes in good condition. These items should be brought in between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on April 24th and 25th or on the morning of the swap between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.


During this event, you will get to exchange your items with other attendees to create a more sustainable future for fashion. This twenty-dollar event includes your item swap, a carbon-neutral beer, and a fireside chat with Precycle Founder and CEO Katerina Bogatireva. In this chat, you will learn more about her sustainability journey and Precycle. You will also get to network with the sustainability community in New York City, which is a great way to connect and make a difference in the world.


To build a greener community, take the first few steps of attending these events and adopting sustainable habits. Any step is one step closer to change.
