Starting a Business When You’re a New Mom

Now that you’ve given birth and met your little one in person, the thought of returning to your old job may not be all that appealing. Maybe you can’t bear the thought of missing milestones and not being there for your baby. Or maybe the cost of childcare is too high in your area, and your salary would barely cover it. Either way, We Are Jersey has some tips and advice on successfully maintaining work-life balance while starting your own business.

Set Up a Workspace For Yourself and Your Baby

Newborns tend to sleep a lot during the day and at night, waking every few hours for feedings. So if you’re starting a business, consider placing a bassinet in your office. You’ll be able to work uninterrupted for a couple of hours, then take a break and tend to your baby’s needs. Use your newborn’s awake time to go out for a walk and enjoy some fresh air. You’ll get a boost of energy that will help your productivity and creativity.

If space allows, set up a baby changing station in your office and stock it with essentials such as diapers, wipes, ointments, pacifiers, burp cloths, and a change of clothes so you won’t have to run around the house trying to find what you need. Speaking of clothes, consider investing in a comfortable and elegant nursing sports bra so that you can take care of your own needs while also caring for your baby.

Take Advantage of Smart Gadgets

Newborns’ sleep patterns are unpredictable, so you may have to finish some important business tasks you didn’t get to complete during the day once they’re down for the night. If your baby sleeps in her own bedroom, you can safely work at your desk and keep your eye on her by purchasing a baby monitor. Select a model that offers a video camera with infrared or night vision, so you can see your little one’s movements even if you’ve installed blackout curtains in her room to help her stay asleep longer. Two-way talk is also an important feature, as you’ll be able to hear her and talk to her while you’re in a different room. A sound machine may also help soothe your little one back to sleep if she awakens in the middle of the night and give you a few more hours of uninterrupted work.

Start an LLC to Protect Your Personal Assets

Protect your family’s finances by establishing a corporate veil between your business and your personal assets. You don't need to hire a costly lawyer to do so: instead, use a formation service online to set up a limited liability company. If you plan on forming an LLC, don’t forget to appoint a registered agent to receive notices and other important documents on your behalf, so you can concentrate on raising your little one and growing your business. Having a registered agent will also let you have more freedom of movement since you won’t have to always be present at the office during business hours. And this can be a great thing when you have to work around your baby’s nap and feeding schedule!

Market Your Small Business

Content marketing is a highly effective tool for small businesses that don't have a huge advertising budget. Once your website is live, help potential customers find you by creating online content and sharing it on social media. Write engaging, informative blog posts to serve as a selling point for your goods or services and increase brand awareness by sharing valuable information with your followers.

Welcoming a new baby home may give you the push you need to become a mompreneur. With a little organization and the right marketing tools, you can start your home-based business while caring for your newborn. And best of all, you won’t have to miss any precious family moments!
