How to Survive Black Friday Shopping

Updated: Nov 29, 2022

Black Friday Shopping Tips and Hacks

You've heard the horror stories. You've seen the videos. Black Friday shopping is not for the faint of heart. But if you're brave enough to venture out into the crowds on the biggest shopping day of the year, then you're going to need a survival guide. Here are a few tips to help you make it through the day without losing your mind (or your place in line).

1. Make a plan of attack.

Decide which stores you want to hit and in what order. Map out your route and try to stick to it as much as possible. The last thing you want is to waste time meandering around the mall aimlessly. And while you're at it, take a look at the store's websites and make note of what items will be on sale and where they'll be located in the store. That way, you can hit those items first and then move on to other things later.

2. Know your budget.

Know how much money you're willing to spend and what items you're hoping to buy before you even set foot in the store. That way, you won't be tempted by all of the amazing deals that are sure to be flying around on Black Friday. (Trust me, there will be plenty.) Write down a list of everyone you need to buy gifts for and what you would like to get them so that you can stay focused while you're shopping.

3. Don't forget about gift cards.

Black Friday is a great time to stock up on gift cards for friends and family (or even yourself). Many stores offer discounts on gift cards, so it's worth checking out some of your favorite places ahead of time to see what deals they're offering. Plus, gift cards are always appreciated because they give the recipient the freedom to choose what they really want or need. And that's always a good thing!

4. Make liberal use of your smartphone (or tablet).

There's no shame in using technology to help you survive Black Friday shopping. Use your phone or tablet to keep track of all the best deals, both online and in-store. Have a particular item that's been selling out everywhere? Set up an alert on your phone so that you'll know when it's back in stock (or find another store that has it in stock). There are also tons of great apps that can help you score some serious discounts on Black Friday, so do some research ahead of time and download a few onto your device before heading out into the madness.

5. Take breaks as needed—but don't leave empty-handed!

It can be easy to get overwhelmed by all of the hustle and bustle on Black Friday but resist the urge to flee empty-handed just because you need a break from all the craziness. If you feel like you're about to lose it, step outside for some fresh air or grab a cup of coffee—whatever helps you regroup and refocus. But whatever you do, don't leave the store without at least getting something! Those Doorbuster deals won't last forever, so if you see something that's too good to pass up, snag it while you still can!
