Locals will tell you Jersey City has changed a lot over the years. Once a pass-through to the Big Apple for commuters, it’s now a destination all of its own. Jersey City is diverse, packed with culture, and still has a slightly gritty feel to it. “We help dozens of families and young professionals relocate to Jersey City every month–some escaping the big city grind, but most are not ready to lose the excitement of New York,” says NYC-based Metropolis Moving. “Many Jersey City locals are still culture vultures who want great music, art, and an offbeat, but not overexposed, eatery.”
Whether you just moved into a home in Jersey City and eager to explore or a longtime local itching to go beyond your Jersey City apartment walls, these are some hidden gems in Jersey City for your “to-do” list—the restaurants, bars, art spaces, and tucked-away finds that make Jersey City stand out as both a worthwhile destination and as a good place to live.

According to The Hoboken Girl creator and Hudson County expert Jennifer Tripucka, this downtown Jersey City spot has some of the best fries in the region. “They’re made with scalloped potatoes, refried in beef tallow and served with a garlic aioli–incredible,” Tripucka raves to us.
Places to eat in The Heights, as recommended by The Hoboken Girl:
The Alps – A newer bar/restaurant combo serving old school food and drinks

Must-try spots according to Slice of Culture
Journalistic supporter of many diverse groups in Jersey City, Slice of Culture co-founder Adrienne Romero shared these hidden gem Jersey City food spots as her top places to grab a tasty bite.
“La Bodega serves up authentic delicious Dominican food,” Romero recommends. “It feels like you are eating grandma’s homemade food, which is the vibe that owner Maricarmen intended. The food is delicious from the pernil, Rabo (oxtail), mangu (mashed plantains), sancocho (soup) and more. There’s also a beautiful mural that pays homage to Jersey City and her family.”
“The first of its kind, Meryendang Pinoy brings the taste of Filipino comfort food right to Downtown Jersey City,” says Romero. “They offer easy grab-and-go options for people who don't want to eat a full meal or for people who want a quick taste of Filipino cuisine. For Filipinos who moved from the Philippines, this is where they go for a taste of back home: tokneneng, hotdogs, siomai, which are all street food, and have expanded to offer lugaw, champorado and even ube champorado. They are deeply embedded in the community from hosting pop-up events to providing a space for people's special moments, parties and more. The owners, Jhonacel and Josan, treat their customers like family and even try their best to cook special requests.”
Romero’s final unique food recommendation is this Filipino market, which pays homage to the culture in its name, design, and food. “They offer an affordable combo deal that will give any fellow Filipino a taste of their childhood and any new customer a reason to come back from more. Aside from the delicious food (like their barbecue, logsilog or beef nilaga, to name a few), the interior correlates perfectly with their cozy-at-home-vibes; the videos and music played are Filipino songs or Filipino artists; and there's a mini mart at the back of the store that sells Filipinos snacks and other goodies.”

For drinks that include evening entertainment, check out what’s going on at Brightside. “Tommy, the owner, and his team are so welcoming to anyone who comes in,” Romero shares. “You can enjoy jazz, karaoke, trivia nights throughout the week. Not to mention they got a game room upstairs and an extensive food and drink menu.”
Sip on delicious drinks ranging from mezcal-based to shitake-infused blended scotch in the backyard area and grab a slice of the infamous pizza offerings for a tasty night out. “Locals come for a drink and stay for the Detroit-style pizza–pillowy, bread-like, and cheesy,” reveals Metropolis Moving company.

Where to see street art in Jersey City
Longtime traveler and blogger Sue Davies at Travel for Life Now has spent decades in New York City, just across the river from Jersey City. With a passion for discovering local street art, she was happy to share her knowledge of the Jersey City street art scene. According to Sue, world-class street art can be found all over Jersey City—here’s how to find it yourself:
A few places to look: Downtown, the Heights, Journal Square, Little India, McGinley Square, near the Holland Tunnel and under Route 139.
Artists: There are murals by famous street artists such as Kobra, Shepard Fairey (most famous for the Obama hope poster), Distort, Queen Andrea, Pixel Pancho, as well as local artists from New Jersey and New York. Our favorite piece is Elefanka and Mousezilla by Ron English. It is on a wall in an out of the way corner of Jersey City, found at 266 Erie, not too far from the huge David Bowie mural by Kobra.
Bonus art: The Mana Contemporary Art Center (another hidden gem in Jersey City) is another place to see beautiful street art. The center has interesting exhibits inside as well.
